Water for peace

Subic Bay, Philippines :: Communities enjoy clean drinking water through water filter donations

Helping to ensure communities have access to clean drinking water through the gift of water filtration has often been a focus of crew's community visits over the years.

Recently, teams from newest vessel Doulos Hope worked with local partners, including Junior Chamber International (JCI), to help with a water filter donation to a community in Olongapo, during the vessel's stay in Subic Bay, Philippines.

This was part of JCI's programme ‘Tupig Para sa Lahat’ (Water for All), which aims to provide clean drinking water for everyone, in line with the organisation's development goals for sustainable cities and communities.

The global non-profit organization was created for enterprising people aged 18 to 40 and has over 500,000 members in more than 100 countries. They focus on professional development, economic opportunities and creative solutions to problems at all levels of society.

One of these problems to solve was for the residents of Barangay Kalaklan, who have been experiencing discolouration in their water supply, indicating non-potability of water.
On this visit, filtration buckets were donated to provide 40 families in the area with clean drinking water.

A week after the project, Barangay Kalaklan’s Sangguniang Kabataan’s (Youth Council) Chairperson Donna, reported on the effectiveness of the filtration buckets, stating that the residents were grateful for the opportunity given to them by the partners, especially Doulos Hope, to enjoy clean water, with the filtration buckets proving to be very effective in filtering minute and unwanted materials from the city water supply system.

As World Water Day approaches, this year’s theme is ‘Water for Peace,’ emphasising the essential role water plays in global stability and prosperity.
