Keeping Doulos Hope afloat: Meet the professional team

Ships :: Behind the scenes, a dedicated technical team works tirelessly to ensure the ship runs smoothly. Without engineers, electricians, repair workers, and others, Doulos Hope simply wouldn’t function.

What makes Doulos Hope travel around Southeast Asia, sharing knowledge, help and hope from one port to another?

Behind the scenes, a dedicated technical team works tirelessly to ensure the ship runs smoothly. Without engineers, electricians, repair workers, and others, Doulos Hope simply wouldn’t function.

To shed light on the importance of these roles, we spoke with four crewmembers who’ve traded traditional careers for life on board. As much as they are essential to the ship, the ship also plays a significant role in their personal and professional lives.

Engineering a new way to use his skills

David, a mechanical engineer from France, worked in the industry for three years before making a bold move — quitting his job to join Doulos Hope

He initially joined for three months and was assigned to the housekeeping department, which was when he got to understand more about the ship. Eventually, David extended his commitment and is now serving a full year on Doulos Hope as a technical worker. “[Serving on the ship] is never boring. You get hands-on experience, tackling a variety of challenges in an ever-changing environment,” he shares.

The biggest thing that he has discovered is that volunteer work is not only for people with strong people skills  . “But we also need technical workers, people with hard skills,” David explains. Whether it’s engine maintenance, plumbing or electrical work, every task plays a vital role in keeping the ship running and moving forward.

At the end of the day, David sees his work on board as more than just fixing machines. “Some of us are fortunate to work with our hands, to fix things [and] help people… I can finally bring my values and profession together, working on board as both a volunteer and engineer.”

Powering impact and character growth

For electrical officer Sam (North Africa), and electrician Lubasi (Zambia), serving on Doulos Hope has been a transformative journey. Sam reflects, “Before this, I worked in a secular company where every decision was about making more money. But here, every decision is about how to help and impact more people.”

Lubasi echoes this sentiment, saying, “It’s not just about the job — it’s an opportunity to learn new cultures, gain new skills and see how the ship is reaching out to people.” And Sam adds, “Now, I’m surrounded by people who share the same vision. For the first time, I feel free to be myself and pursue my goals.”

Though they come from different backgrounds, both Sam and Lubasi agree that serving on Doulos Hope has been an opportunity for personal growth, developing not only their technical expertise but also their leadership and interpersonal skills, all while contributing to a mission far greater than themselves.

Fixing his eyes on building a lasting legacy

Phillip (Zimbabwe) has worked in many fields — engineering, construction, teaching — but felt there was something more he was meant to do. Years ago, he joined Logos Hope as an engine   watchkeeper, then returned home to Zimbabwe, building a stable career. Yet, he couldn’t shake the feeling that he was in the wrong place.

After much hesitation, he made the switch back to ship life. “Coming from a paid job where I had financial security to a place where I no longer had control over my finances was a big adjustment. But at the same time, it was a blessing. It changed my perspective on life, money and what really matters.”

Now serving as a repairman on Doulos Hope, Phillip keeps the ship running — fixing plumbing, maintaining structures and handling repairs. The work may be behind the scenes, but it’s essential. “Even though I don’t get paid, my needs are met. I’m learning new skills and growing in ways I never expected.”

For those considering a similar path, he offers a challenge: What kind of legacy do you want to leave? “Is life just about working, making money, and going on nice vacations? Then what? If there’s an opportunity to use your skills for something bigger, take it. That’s a lasting impact.”

We’re grateful for the many partners who, like our crew, help keep Doulos Hope moving forward. Through your prayers, practical support, and generosity, you play a vital part in bringing knowledge, help and hope to communities across Southeast Asia. Together, we continue making a lasting impact — transforming lives both on board and in every port we visit.
