Day of the Seafarer

Logos Hope :: GBA Ships celebrates Day of the Seafarer alongside everyone who serves in the marine operations departments on their ships.

GBA Ships requires professional seafarers to successfully run Logos Hope and Doulos Hope. However, they are best known for being a training ground for those with no or little prior work experience, including in the field of marine operations. Some people even become qualified able seafarers, which can be used professionally in the future.

Why did you join marine operations?

Engine department training officer, Jotham (UK), said, “I thought working in engine would be cool, but also that I would learn many new things because I had no experience. I wanted to give it a go, and I know it was going to be a big challenge.”

Yannick (Switzerland) said, “Deck department was my first preference. We say that deck is more like a serving department and that’s what I like, to be there for other people, to make their lives easier.”

What have you learnt through being in marine operations?

Yannick said, “Sometimes you are given a lot of responsibility, even as a young person. Discipline and teamwork are also required. More than ever, I see how important it is to have a team and good leaders around you. They guide you in your work, but in general life matters too. When I look towards the future, I want to become a leader like that. I am looking forward to becoming the next bosun, for the opportunity and challenge that it will be to lead the team.”

What do you think the value is in the marine operations training on board?

Jotham said, “For some people, the programmes stretch them to their limits, which I believe is good for them. They are becoming more of a complete person and more capable because they’re not just in their comfort zone. Then there are those that learn quickly and are confident, which is also good. It’s good for character building. You develop humility, patience and a willingness to succeed because it is hard. I think it’s really great that we take non-professionals and give them opportunities to flourish. Most people, if not everyone, benefit from this.”

The GBA Ships marine operations teams on board Logos Hope and Doulos Hope are comprised of many hard-working men and women from different nationalities and levels of experience.
